SXA "Hangin' Loose" with Ben Horton

My friend Ben Horton was in town last week to paint the new Republik concert venue / bar. For those of you who don't know who Ben is I'll give you a little background according to what I found out while talking story with him. Ben is originally from San Luis Obispo but now resides down in San Diego. He and Russ Pope were a 2 man operation together running Scarecrow Skateboards. From there Ben went on to be the design director for Black Box Distribution (Zero and Mystery) all while running his own company Slave Skateboards. For the masses you may also recognize his art from the many contributions he's made to the RVCA Artist Network Program. Aside from art he's also a proud husband and father to his 2 boys. All in all Ben's a super rad no nonsense guy who is doing things on his own terms and living the dream.

Hickam Skate Hangar

It seems like yesterday that Hickam Skate Hangar was the playground and training ground for Hawaii's up and coming skateboarders. The list is long and the history is deeply rooted. Names like Kyle Yanagimoto, Alf Kondo, Rene Mathyssen, Rob Carlyon, Robby Gaskell, Chris Kays, Ian Okui, Alika Freitas, etc, etc. have finely honed their skills here. Hickam houses the only 2 wooden bowls on Oahu. Being that the park is located on Hickam Air Force Base this makes access to the skate park a challenge because of the high security protocol one has to go through to gain access to the park. The building of this park lead to the building of other skateparks as well as much improved quality concrete parks throughout Oahu as well as the outer islands. Many a pro has come and entertained and inspired the local skateboarders of Hawaii here. For more on the BBQ check out our SXA site!
